The situation
AMS Tutoring runs group and private tutoring at UBC with two coordinators overseeing 30 to 40 tutors. In fall 2020 the program moved fully online. Varsity athletes receive subsidized tutoring, and at the end of every term the coordinator tallied sessions and hours by hand to process payment.
What Nimbus did
- Reached out to clubs and student societies across campus to promote the service.
- Supplied materials the coordinator shared with professors of large first-year courses.
- Gave tutors self-promotion tips, so they could reach more students.
- Brought on the engineering undergraduate society, adding engineering courses the AMS could not fund on its own.
- Moved athletes to in-app credits, and handled technical questions and refunds.
“Nimbus reaching out to them helped promote the service because there’s only two of us overseeing 30 to 40 tutors for both in group and private tutoring, so we don’t have that much time to devote to marketing.”
The result
In its first semester on Nimbus, the AMS quadrupled the number of tutoring sessions, reduced its administrative workload, and started group online tutoring.
“On the Nimbus app, …[the athletes] they just pay on an as needed credit basis through the app, which is super helpful for myself as I don’t have to keep track of that.”
